While growing up in Utah, James Williams always knew he was expected to serve a two year Mormon mission. Williams is called to serve in Mexico, though he doesn’t speak Spanish—yet. From the very beginning of his mission, Williams discovers that it is much more challenging than what he expected. A terrible accident in Mexico leads to Williams being locked up for over a month. The subsequent events lead Williams to question not only his reasons for going on a mission, but also why he believes in God. “Wall of Faith” is a compelling story of one young man’s search to understand his faith—even when that very faith is put to the test. Based on a true story.

Lately I find myself obsessed with these missionary memoirs - I think it's similar to medical residency - being trapped in this overwhelming and all-encompassing and unforgiving environment. The outer trappings are different but the claustrophobic feel is similar.

I enjoyed this one. Managed to capture that slightly Kafka, slightly Lord of the Flies tone. Writing good enough to not be distracting. I'd read something else by him.

Wall Of Faith J Lloyd Morgan 9780988633063 Books Reviews

Wall of Faith is an amazing, amazing book, and that word doesn't even begin to cover it. It's the story, the messages... Morgan has created a page-turning vortex that I, the reader, couldn't escape. Wall of Faith took me on a journey and shook me awake. As a non-Morman, the read challenged my attitudes and had me thinking deeply about spiritual issues. I found myself laughing and crying while I read. A fantastic read that transcends denominations and beliefs.
Disclaimer I received a free copy from the author, which did not influence my opinion of the book.

Wall of Faith starts out with Elder James Williams entering the Missionary Training Center, or MTC, to prepare for his mission in Merida, Mexico. While he's there he meets several other missionaries also headed to Merida. After a little bit of a rocky start with his companion, he eventually becomes good friends with him. When his nine weeks in the MTC are up, he and the other missionaries fly to Mexico to begin spreading the gospel.

Elder Williams' new companion is Elder Lopez Soto, and for the first few weeks Williams is frustrated by their lack of progress in getting any farther than the first discussion with any of their investigators. But that problem seems insignificant when a car mows him down while he is riding his bike, severely injuring his knee. He is sent to live with the mission president's two assistants to recover. While he's there, Williams meets other sick and injured missionaries who tell him horror stories about Mexican doctors and hospitals. Williams also goes to see several different doctors, who say they are unable to tell what is wrong with his knee without slicing it open--something Williams is highly reluctant to allow. After the other unwell missionaries are sent back to the States for medical treatment, Williams is left alone with the two assistants. They are unhelpful, to say the least, in trying to get him the treatment--or even the food--he needs, so eventually Williams sneaks out to call home in the hopes that contacting church authorities in Salt Lake City will get him some help.

Eventually Williams makes it back to Utah and has a successful surgery on his knee, but has to endure stares and rude comments about the fact that he is home from his mission early. (If you grew up in Utah, you know there is a lot of pressure for every man to serve a full two-year mission, and lots of times people look down on anyone who doesn't go or comes home early for any reason.) Williams feels that he will be a failure if he doesn't finish his mission, so he heads back out into the field, this time to Montana. There he has more bad experiences and meets Elder Bannin, who helps him realize that there's no shame in coming home early from your mission because of injury or sickness.

I'll admit it, the first time I read Wall of Faith I was a little disturbed by the extreme depths of depression Williams reached while serving his mission. People in positions of authority were horrible to him, which leads to the question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" This is a question that atheists ask Christians endlessly in an attempt to confound them and "prove" that there is no God, but Morgan answers that question SO well! It has to do with the fact that God refuses to take away a person's agency. And not only that, but even when the situation is grim, there is always a little bit of humor peppered in among the gloom. Morgan has a very sharp, smart-aleck sense of humor, and Williams' puns and snarky comments always make me laugh.

So while the dark parts of this book will probably shock you, they're worth plowing through to get to the end. Throughout the book when all these bad things are happening to Elder Williams, you just want him to catch a break and have things easy for once, and he eventually does get his happy ending. Wall of Faith is an incredible story of overcoming adversity and coming out stronger because of it. Even if you're not Mormon it's a great tale of faith in God. I would recommend this to anyone Christian or anyone who needs a little faith in humanity restored. Five stars all the way.

Having a son that's currently serving a mission in Pennsylvania, and this book really hit home! Job very well done!!!
Story of a young missionary in Mexico. The experiences he encounters will keep you turning pages until the very end.
I was unable to put the book down from the moment I received it. The author pulled you into his reality and allowed you to see he struggle in his world. As a member of the LDS church I have struggled with my faith and had my testimony tested. However, reading what Elder William's went through it helps you put your own struggles into perspective. This book is truly an eye-opener.
It is a wonderful read for those in or out of the LDS faith. Anyone who needs to know that sometimes it is okay to make that decision to do what is best for yourself. Not what everyone else wants you to do.
Just finished reading Wall Of Faith. Wow, just wow. I couldn't put it down. It was amazing.

I thought the writing was good but also the fact that it was a real story to tell. I was able to connect to the main character. I could identify with various problems he had. This story could have been altered and events could have been sugar coated but they weren't. Real life.

The overall message was inspiring. I truly believe everyone has at least one story to tell (if not more) of their struggle/struggles and what they got out of it. How did these events shape your life? What did you decided to make of the experiences?

Just awesome. Thanks for sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly...life.
This book is very well written and captured my interest right away. I liked how honest and sincere the main character was, and how positive he remained, even when describing the difficult people he encounters. He deals with deep frustration, yes, but never hatred or bitterness. Although this book deals with some difficult issues, the author has portrayed them in a way that is sensitive and full of hope and the desire to endure.
