The Black Cat Pilgrim Classics eBook Edgar Allan Poe
Short engaging horror story. Can be read in one sitting, in about a half-an-hour.
Favorite quotes include:
"But my disease grew upon me - for what disease is like Alcohol!" (7)
"But to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul." (2)
"The guilt of my dark deed disturbed me but little. ... I determined to wall it up ... I soundly and tranquilly slept; aye, slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul!" (27, 24)
"Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness ... Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not?" (10)
This last passage, and indeed the theme of the story, makes me think of some famous Scriptures:
"I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. ... What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" -Romans 7:21,24,25 (New International Version)
Despite being a tortured soul, as another reviewer points out, Poe is said to have found comfort towards the end of his life by a more forceful embrace of Catholicism.

The Black Cat Pilgrim Classics eBook Edgar Allan Poe Reviews
Excellent book, very good plot, well written.
Recommend it highly.
great book
Happy with my purchase
Classic short history. Read it long time ago.
"The Black Cat" is an Edgar Allan Poe classic that belongs in everybody's collection. Its disturbing but very entertaining and its one of those books that its hard to put down. Because its a short story, its easy to complete in one sit down. Must Have!.
Always a fan of walls and people falling to their own bravado. I doubt the style would sell today but it's worth the read for the history of the craft.
This is one of many Edgar Allan Poe short stories that I never tire of— it’s brilliant, with its turns and denouement,
